The An Post archive

The An Post archive exists to preserve, document and publicise the history of the Post Office in Ireland, to promote education and culture, to assist in the conduct of research and to support the business needs of the Company.

Archive material that was housed in the GPO in 1916 was burnt when the building was destroyed during the rebellion. Papers relating to the administration of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, which was responsible for the Post Office until the 31 December 1983, are held in the National Archives of Ireland.
