Francis Johnston, architect of the GPO

The General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin’s O’Connell Street, is perhaps the best-known work of the architect Francis Johnston.

Born in Armagh in 1760, Johnston came to Dublin at the age of 18 to study architecture.

  • He worked in the offices of Samuel Sproule 1782 - 1784
  • Became architect for Archbishop of Armagh 1784
  • Appointed Architect to Board of Works 1805
