Spotlight on Killybegs

Killybegs

“Na Cealla Beaga” the Small Cells.

Killybegs Town is well known as Ireland’s premier fishing port with a beautiful natural harbour.  A very old town steeped in history, from Viking invasions, fleets of ships carrying guns and gold, pirates and slaves, the Spanish Armada (Autumn 1588) and various battles. The town is also known for its dedication to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the patron Saint of Seafarers with its holy well visited by thousands annually.  This holy well was built by monks who prayed for safety on a stormy night at sea.  St Catherine’s Church and Graveyard and the ruins of Kits Castle (built in 1355) all link back to a very distant past.

Killybegs today is a busy fishing port with the large investment of a new pier bringing in cargo. Wind and wave energy, offshore oil and gas exploration are evident at certain times of the year. Killybegs is a new destination for cruise ships over the last few years with numbers increasing year on year.

Situated in close proximity to the majestic Sliabh Liag Cliffs, Killybegs is a great central location to explore the many secrets and the natural beauty surrounding it. The magnificent fishing vessels are a must see for boat lovers.

Visit the Maritime and Heritage Centre or pop in to the information office where you can find out so much more.  Welcome to a place of hills and beaches, hospitality and friendliness.
