Spotlight on Mitchelstown

Mitchelstown

Baile Mhistéala

Situated to the south of the Galtee Mountains Mitchelstown has a population of around 3,300 and is famous for its cheese production.

The town is deemed to be one of the best planned Georgian towns in the country with its grid pattern of two main streets interconnected by a number of smaller streets. The blueprint for the town was established by the second and third Earls of Kingston to allow panoramic views of the Mountains.

The town is the smallest in the country to have a full 360 degree ring road.

Why not visit Mitchelstown Caves, discovered in 1833 and located on the R639 between Mitchelstown and Cahir, the cave is privately owned and has been developed as a show cave. It is open to the public through a guided tour.
