Love story celebrates master of miniature

New Philatelic Shop and Museum !

20/07/2010 - The new Philatelic Shop at the GPO is now open along with a Postal Museum showing the history of the Post Office in Ireland.   The exhibition at the new museum is entitled: Letters, Lives and Liberty.  Letters, Lives and Liberty showcases the development of the postal service and its contribution to Irish life and society over the centuries.The central role played by the GPO and its staff during the events of Easter Monday, 1916 is also shown.  The exhibit includes historic philatelic and postal memorabilia as well as high-tech interactive displays, and a ‘Pepper’s Ghost’.The Pepper’s Ghost re-creates how the events of Easter Monday unfolded through the eyes of the Post Office staff on duty on that historic day.

28/05/2010 - A postage stamp celebrating the centenary of the birth of poet Máirtín Ó Direáin was launched by An Post today (Friday) at the poet’s birthplace at Sruthán on Inis Mór in the Aran islands.

The Tiger roars once again!

11/02/2010 - An Post celebrated the Chinese New Year of the Tiger by issuing a new 82c stamp which covers letter postage to any part of the world . The stamp shows an image of a tiger from an 18th century Tibetan-Buddhist painting currently on display at the National Museum of Ireland.

150th Anniversary of the Birth of Douglas Hyde – President of Ireland.

21/01/2010 - The First President of Ireland, Douglas Hyde was born on 17 January 1860 near Castlerea, County Roscommon.  Seven years later his family moved to Frenchpark, County Roscommon, where his father served as a Church of Ireland clergyman.  Growing up, he took a great interest in the Irish language.
