Great Irish Songs
On May 9, we issue a set of stamps that celebrate four iconic and internationally recognised songs, performed by renowned Irish artistes.
Ireland is noted the world over for its unique cultural heritage and nothing communicates this aspect of national identity better than the country’s much-loved songs. The ‘Great Irish Songs’ issue highlights the power of the stamp to tell a story. The songs featured are Danny Boy (John McCormack); On Raglan Road (Luke Kelly); With or Without You (U2) and Dreams (The Cranberries).
Did you know?
Patrick Kavanagh, who wrote On Raglan Road as a poem in 1946, suggested to Luke Kelly in The Bailey pub in Dublin that he should sing the composition to the music of the traditional song, ‘The Dawning of the Day’ (Fáinne Geal an Lae).
