West meets East as An Post says Noh
Dublin 01/03/2017 The artistic marriage of Japanese Noh theatre and the creativity of Ireland’s greatest poet has been celebrated in a new international stamp released by An Post.
W B Yeats adapted the highly-stylised Japanese theatre form into his own plays, particularly ‘The Death of Cuchulainn’ and ‘At the Hawks Well’. Best known as a poet, Yeats was an accomplished playwright and was captured by the beauty of the Noh form.
The new stamp is based on Yeats production of At the Hawks Well and is a celebration of Yeats artistic adventure outside his own literary tradition and experience. Designed by Dublin based Zinc Design Consultants and features a red sun symbol, gold mask and wings on a black backdrop to illustrate Japanese design. The stamp also features the signature of the world renowned Nobel Literature prize winner.
The stamp, beautiful First day Cover or unique Miniature Sheet set can also be purchased online at irishstamps.ie or by calling to the stamp counters at Dublin’s GPO.
Coming just after Yeats150, the celebration of the poet’s life and works, the stamp and accompanying material are worthy collector’s items as well as miniature works of art in their own right.
