Under Section 148 of the Broadcasting Act 2009, it is a prosecutable offence to be found in possession of an unlicensed television set. Fines for an unlicensed television set can be up to €1,000 for a first offence and €2,000 for subsequent offences.

There are a number of ways to buy or renew a licence so you can choose which of them suits you best.

Payment Methods

How do I pay for my TV Licence?

  • By Laser or Mastercard/Visa using the TV Licence Online Service
  • By cash/cheque at any Post Office
  • By Direct Debit from a current bank account (fill in the direct debit mandate form and return to your local TV Licence Record Office).
  • By Laser or MasterCard/Visa through our Call Centre 1890 228528
  • By sending a cheque (crossed and made payable to An Post) to any of our TV Licence Records' Offices
  • By purchasing TV licence stamps at any post office
  • By cash at selected Postpoint outlets

If you buy your TV Licence through our Online Service or Call Centre it will be posted to your home within ten to fourteen days.

When renewing your TV licence remember to have on hand your current TV licence reference number (and PIN for our Online Service) which is on the reminder notice sent from the TV licence section. To avoid delays you should bring your reminder notice when paying at the Post Office.

Moving House?


If you move home, you can log on to our Online Service to change your Personal Details or notify your local TV Licence Record Office and they will amend your licence to your new address.

If you do not have your 17 digit TV Reference number and 5 digit PIN, you should email or write to your local TV Licence Records office requesting a licence transfer. You can find these contact details on the upper right hand side of your TV Licence correspondence.

Please include the following details in your request:
  • Your Name (i.e Licence holder's name)
  • Old address in full - including house name and number
  • New address in full - including house name and number
  • Previous occupant's name, if applicable, so that we can remove the record from the National TV Licence database

If you have mislaid your reminder and wish to renew online please choose the "First Time Licence" option. This licence will be associated with your original record and the expiry is subject to amendment.

Terms and conditions 

  1. Any person in occupancy at an address where a television set is held is legally responsible for the licensing of the television set regardless of ownership of either the premises or the set itself.
  2. Under Section 148 of the Broadcasting Act 2009, it is a prosecutable offence to be in possession of an unlicensed television set. Fines for a first offence can be up to €1,000 and €2,000 for subsequent offences. 
  3. A Television Licence is deemed to be granted by way of a Renewal of a previous licence where the licence a) is granted to the person for which the previous licence was granted, b) relates to the same specified place to which the previous licence related and is granted within one month before or within twelve months after the expiration of the previous licence.
  4. A First Time/Original Television Licence is every licence not granted by way of renewal. It comes into force on the day on which it was granted and continues in force until the end of the eleventh month after the month it was granted. If you choose to purchase a First Time/Original TV Licence when the Renewal option is more appropriate, An Post, on behalf of the Minister, may amend your licence in such manner as appears to him or her or An Post to be proper in the circumstances, in particular, (for the purpose of correction) a date to which it relates.
