* Some ATM operators or merchants may charge a(n) (additional) fee or set their own limits. Please confirm whether any fees or limits apply, before making a withdrawal or purchase.

** Please note that the Government of Ireland charges an annual stamp duty on prepaid card accounts. There is a €2.50 fee every year if the Card is used in an ATM. There is also another €2.50 fee every year if the Card is used in a point of sale transaction.

*** The total amount you may load onto all prepaid cards issued to you by us during any twelve (12) month period. 

+ The issuer will waive such fee if there is no remaining balance following the debit of any monthly inactivity fee (or if the balance is less than the fee).

Merchant transactions and ATM withdrawals in a currency other than the currency of the Card will be exchanged to the currency on the Card at an exchange rate determined by MasterCard® on the day the transaction is processed, increased by 5.75%.

  1. Why are your rates different to those I found when searching on the web?
    The rate of exchange on news sites and in search results is generally the wholesale rate of exchange. These rates of exchange are not available to the general public.

    Our rate of exchange for Dollars and Sterling, published above, are retail rates. 

  2. Does An Post charge commission?
    No. This service is commission free.

  3. Does An Post only sell cash?
    No, An Post sells Dollars and Sterling in cash at 350 Post Offices nationwide.

    You can also buy, and load, Dollars and Sterling onto the new PostFX™ prepaid MasterCard® currency card. This service will be available in over 600 Post Offices nationwide by June, 2013.

    We will buy back any unused Dollars or Sterling you have on your PostFX™ prepaid MasterCard® currency card.
  4. How can I pay for my Sterling or Dollars?
    An Post accepts cash or debit card only. 

  5. Do I need to pre-order?
    It is not necessary to pre-order Sterling or Dollars when purchasing at the Post Office.
  6. Can I buy Sterling and Dollars in all An Post offices?
    Not all Post Offices offer this service; it is available in selected offices only.
  7. What is a PostFX™ prepaid MasterCard® currency card?
    PostFX™ MasterCard® currency card is a secure and convenient way to manage your money when travelling to the UK and the USA.
  8. Are there any limits to the amount I can buy?
    There is a minimum purchase amount of £20Stg or $20USD and a maximum limit of €6,000 in a single transaction when you buy cash. Check the fees and limits for the PostFX™ prepaid MasterCard® currency card.

  9. Is ID required when changing Euro into Dollars or Sterling?
    1. When you buy cash, ID (Drivers Licence or Passport) is required for transactions with a value of €1,000 or more.
    2. When  you buy a PostFX™ card  you need a valid photo ID, e.g. passport or driving licence, and a utility or household bill for your current address.
    3. To top-up your PostFX™ card  you need a valid photo ID, e.g. passport or driving licence.

  10. Do I have to pay for the PostFX™ card?
    No, the card is free.
  11. What charges are there for using the PostFX™ card?
    1. There are no charges when you use your PostFX™ card at retail outlets displaying the MasterCard® logo.
    2. You will be charged for taking cash from an ATM, £1.50 or $2.50

      Note: Merchant transactions and ATM withdrawals in a currency other than the currency of the Card will be exchanged to the currency on the Card at an exchange rate determined by MasterCard® on the day the transaction is processed, increased by 5.75%.

  12. What happens when all the funds are used on my PostFX™ card.
    Frequent travellers can top-up the funds on their card between trips at participating Post Offices. To top-up your PostFX™ card  you need a valid photo ID, e.g. passport or driving licence.
  13. Where can I use my PostFX™ card?
    At any ATM or retail outlet displaying the MasterCard® logo. You will be charged for taking cash from an ATM, £1.50 or $2.50.

    If you withdraw a currency from an ATM other than the currency on your card charges will be higher. What happens if I lose my PostFX™ card?

    You will need one card for each currency.
  15. Will An Post buy back any un-used Sterling or Dollars from me?
    We do not buy back un-used notes.

    You can change any un-used funds on your PostFX™ card back into Euro in Post Offices offering the PostFX™ service.

  16. What denominations of currency are available?
    Notes are sold in denominations of 20 and 50, in both Sterling and Dollars.
