Important information for sending mail abroad

*An Post track Registered Post International up to dispatch from the Republic of Ireland. Online tracking is not available to every country. Registered Post International receives secure handling and is signed for on delivery.

How does it work?

Simply visit your local Post Office and pick up a Registered Post label. Your post will get secure handling and is insured† too, giving you peace of mind from the moment you hand over your item.

†The value of an item must be declared at the time of posting.  Insurance levels vary depending on the delivery destination, and may be subject to content limitations, please see Insurance and compensation for more detail.

What does it offer?

  • Secure delivery, with signature, for international mail through the Postal Operator in the country of destination.

* Postage stamps are excluded.
** Customer wishing to send jewellery or precious metals to the UK are advised to avail of our PakSafe service.

How do I use it?
  • Bring your item to any Post Office.
  • Declare the value of your item.
  • Attach the Registered Post International Label to the front of the item and pay the appropriate postage.
  • Complete a Customs Declaration form CP72 for all parcels or where the value of the contents is more than €300. All other items need a CN22.

 

Before you post:

  • Ask for a Registered Post label at your local Post Office.  
  • Declare the accurate value of the item you are sending2.
  • Attach the correct postage on to your item.
  • Hand the item over the counter to a member of counter staff.
  • Your transaction receipt is proof of posting.
  • If you require evidence to whom the item was sent please ask for a Certificate of Posting at the time of posting.

Sending money?

    • We recommend that you avoid sending money by post. Although money will be accepted it is not covered by insurance under the Registered Post service. An Post offers a range of services for you to send money abroad.

After you post:

  • You can track your post online, up to despatch from Ireland.
  • Where information is not available online delivery confirmation is available from Customer Service 1850 57 58 59.

Insurance and compensation:

  • Insurance cover varies according to destination, UK, EU or Rest of World.
  • Insurance cover is not available for certain items including documents, cash and coins, bank drafts, vouchers with a monetary face value, passports, jewellery, precious metals such as platinum, gold or silver, glass and other fragile items.   1. Registered Post International items will only be delivered when signed for. A copy of the signature can be obtained on request from the delivering Postal Operator; this may be requested through An Post Customer Services.
  2. You are insured for the declared value of the item at the time of posting up to a maximum of the cover available to the destination country.

Loss, Damage or Delay - what do I do?

Keep your transaction receipt (or certificate of posting, where applicable) in a safe place as claims cannot be processed without it.

As well as proof of posting, your receipt also contains the item number and date of posting. You can complain within 1 month from receipt of an item; and 6 months from date of posting of international items.

Please note that enquiries regarding items posted to or from other countries may take some time resolve.

Important information for sending mail abroad

Due to a tightening of airline security  it is no longer possible to accept ink or toner cartridges.  Check the full list of items restricted from the outbound International Mail services.

Due to temporary additional security measures taken by the United States Homeland Security Agency, mail destined for the United States and weighing more than 450g may be subject to short delays.


Compensation
In the event that your registered item is not received by the addressee, An Post will compensate you subject to An Post general conditions and the conditions contained within the (new window, pdf) Guide to An Post Services, a copy of which is available at every Post Office. An Post must be satisfied that the loss or damage occurred in the post, as compensation is not payable through a cause outside the control of An Post.

When registering an item ensure to declare its replacement value as compensation rates are related to the declared value and registration fee paid. Where no value is declared a maximum of €25.39 is payable.

  1. An Post reserves the right to return the contents of a registered item instead of paying compensation. Compensation paid will not exceed the replacement value of the article lost or of damages sustained.
  2. Compensation is not paid for any consequential loss damage or injury arising from the loss, delay, non-delivery or mis-delivery of Registered Post.  
  3. Compensation cover varies by country of destination and can be checked before posting in the Guide to An Post Services available at your local Post Office counter.
