‘Go Green’ in support of the An Post Sean Kelly team

Cycling legend Kelly wants Ireland to ‘Go Green’ in support of the team

Fans encouraged to show their colours in support of the An Post Sean Kelly cycling team in the Tour of Ireland, Friday 21st – Sunday 23rd AugustIreland’s cycling legend Seán Kelly is calling on natives of towns from Enniskerry to Bandon to get out on the streets this weekend in support of the An Post Seán Kelly team as they saddle up to take on the might of another legend, Lance Armstrong and new boy on the block Mark Cavendish, in the Tour of Ireland.

The ‘boys in green’ of the An Post team will be flying the flag for Ireland, and Kelly is looking for Irish people to line the streets and show their support for the riders as they pass through on Friday (Powerscourt to Waterford), Saturday (Clonmel to Killarney) and Sunday (Bantry to Cork)

The An Post ‘Go Green’ team will be out rewarding fans along the An Post Sprint lines each day, as well as the start and finish lines, with prizes to be won for anyone showing their green colours and backing Ireland’s An Post team, with further exclusive prizes for anyone’s who picture is posted up on the An Post team’s facebook page each day. www.facebook.com/anpostcycling

“The team are just finishing up their final preparations at their base in Belgium with team manager Kurt Bogaerts and are due back home on Thursday,” said Kelly. “They have all been really looking forward to coming back to race on home soil and riding against the likes of Lance and Mark, but obviously the sad news of the untimely death of Paul (Healion) on Sunday night has affected them. Paul was a valuable member of my Academy team up until 2007 and a great rider and a real winner and my sympathies go to his wife and his family.

“Our guys, like Paul’s own team, the Irish National Team, just want to get out there now and ride a good race in his honour, and give a strong show of pride in Irish cycling, the sport he loved, and was such a good ambassador for.”

The race starts in Wicklow on Friday, 21st August when over 140 riders head out on a route across eight counties toward the final destination of the City of Cork, on Sunday, 23rd. The 600km race has been awarded a 2.1 ranking on the UCI (the world governing body for cycling) calendar and will attract some of the best professional teams from Europe, USA, Australia and South Africa, including recent Tour de France heroes Mark Cavendish and Lance Armstrong. The route embraces key towns and cities as well as iconic mountain passes and splendid Irish scenery.
