Welcome to our exciting handwriting competition for 2017. An Post and INTO challenge you to take part and to test your handwriting skills.

Pupils from the same class may complete the competition in English, Irish or any other latin based language taught in the school (see entry guidelines below for more details).

Handwriting theme

The theme for this year's challenge is: Witness to History: Life in Ireland in the 1900s.

The writing competition, images and extract used by the pupils are a chance to learn: about what children and families lives were like in Ireland 100 years ago.

The competition and lesson plans focus on the exhibition in the GPO Witness History Visitor Centre at the GPO, Dublin, with facts and information about where people lived, what they ate and what life was like for ordinary people a century ago.

How to enter

1. Learn about your topic
Below are two lesson plans, both of which focus on the theme of Witness to History: Life in Ireland in the early 1900s. Use these lesson plans to help you write your competition entry.

2. Entry Guidlines
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before you start writing your entry, make sure to read the entry guidelines which explain:

  • How handwriting will be judged
  • The word count for each category

3. Get writing!
Download the entry template for your category:

Wide line spacing entry template. This template has extra wide line spacing. Teachers: It is important to clearly mark on the template:

  • whether the student is at primary or secondary school
  • what category the entry is in
  • include the relevant information in the space provided, if the entry is being judged as a special award.

Teachers, please print/ photocopy one entry template (in black and white) for each pupil in the class.

4. Return class entries
Return the top entry from each class/ category to the INTO staff representative in your school.

5. Staff INTO representatives
Use the freepost envelope provided and the competition entry form, to post all your school's entries to us at:

By taking part you, your teacher, your principal and your school can win great prizes. 

  • By entering, teachers will go into a draw for a luxury weekend away for two to the value of €300.
  • Winners are chosen based on class participation
  • In Categories One, Two, Three and Four an overall national winner and four regional runners-up will be selected
  • A Special award will be made to one overall winner and one regional runner-up will also be selected

Overall National Winners

  • Category One national winner will win €500 for the school and a Postperson visit to their classroom with goodies for the class 
  • Category Two, Three, Four and the Special Award will win a VIP class pass to the new GPO Witness History Visitor Centre
  • Each Category winner will also receive a €50 One4all gift card for the winning pupil, their teacher and principal

Regional Runners-up

Four runners-up in each category will win: 

  • €100 cash prize for the school
  • €25 One4all gift card for the runner up pupil
  • €25 One4all gift card for their teacher
  • €25 One4all gift card for their school principal 

Closing date

The deadline for entries is Friday, February 10, 2017 so get posting.


  • Category one: Junior infants and senior infants
  • Category two: First class and sceond class
  • Category three: Third class and fourth class
  • Category four: Fifth class and sixth class
  • Special award: Special needs class entries and entries from students with a special need

In order to recognise the hard work that pupil's put into their entries, participation certificates will be available to download and print. 

These  certificates will be available on the website after the competition closes on February 10th.
