Handwriting theme

The theme for this year's challenge is: Children and Families in the 1916 Rising.

This year's lesson plans support the theme. There are lots of activities and chances to learn: About how children were caught up in the events and the impact of that week on their lives.

The competition and lesson plans focus on the central role of the General Post Office in the 1916 Rising and highlight An Post's 1916 Centenary stamps and our new GPO Witness History Visitor Centre.

How to enter

1. Learn about your topic
Below are two lesson plans, both of which focus on the theme of Children and Families in the 1916 Easter Rising. Use these lesson plans to help you write your competition entry.

2. Entry Guidlines
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before you start writing your entry, make sure to read the entry guidelines which explain:

  • How handwriting will be judged
  • The word count for each category

3. Get writing!
Pupils can create a piece of writing based on their own ideas. Or they may choose to copy down a piece of writing from the board or taken from a book, poem, etc.

Download the entry template for your category:

Teachers, please print/ photocopy one entry template (in black and white) for each pupil in the class.
**Complete the entry template in your best handwriting**

4. Return class entries
Select the top entry from each class/ category and submit this to the INTO staff representative in your school.

5. Staff INTO representatives submit the school's entries
Using the freepost envelope provided, the INTO staff representative will submit the top entries from each class, along with the school's competition entry form, to:

By taking part you, your teacher, your principal and your school can win great prizes. 

  • By entering, teachers will go into a draw for a luxury weekend away for two to the value of €300.
  • Winners are chosen based on class participation
  • In Categories One, Two, Three and Four an overall national winner and four regional runners-up will be selected
  • In the Special Category one overall winner and one regional runner-up will be selected

Overall National Winners

  • Category One national winner will win €500 for the school and a Postperson visit to their classroom with goodies for the class 
  • Category Two, Three, Four and Special Category will win a VIP class pass to the new GPO Witness History Visitor Centre
  • Each Category winner will also receive a €50 One4all gift card for the winning pupil, their teacher and principal

Regional Runners-up

Four runners-up in each category will win: 

  • €100 cash prize for the school
  • €25 One4all gift card for the runner up pupil
  • €25 One4all gift card for their teacher
  • €25 One4all gift card for their school principal 

Closing date

The deadline for entries is Friday, March 4, 2016 so get posting.


  • Category one: Junior infants and senior infants
  • Category two: First class and sceond class
  • Category three: Third class and fourth class
  • Category four: Fifth class and sixth class
  • Special category: Special needs class entries
  • Special category: Special needs class entries (wide line spacing)

In order to recognise the hard work that pupil's put into their entries, participation certificates will be available to download and print. 

These  certificates will be available on the website after the competition closes on March 4th.
