St Valentine's Day

The first Valentine

The remains of the Saint Valentine are preserved in a shrine in the Carmelite Church in Whitefriar Street in Dublin. Though young lovers have prayed to him since the days of ancient Rome, Valentine himself was not an ardent lover. A pious saint, who was martyred for his faith, he drew the wrath of the pagan emperor, Claudius the Cruel, by performing wedding ceremonies. Claudius had prohibited marriage because he thought married men were less likely to join his army, so the patron saint of lovers was put to death.
