Francis Johnston, architect of the GPO
The General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin’s O’Connell Street, is perhaps the best-known work of the architect Francis Johnston.
Born in Armagh in 1760, Johnston came to Dublin at the age of 18 to study architecture.
- He worked in the offices of Thomas Cooley 1778 - 1782
- He worked in the offices of Samuel Sproule 1782 - 1784
- Became architect for Archbishop of Armagh 1784
- Appointed Architect to Board of Works 1805
