Stamp for St Columban – first to articulate a sense of being Irish


22 October 2015: A new postage stamp celebrates the 1400th anniversary of the death of St Columban (AD 543 - 615) who is remembered as one of the greatest of the Irish missionary monks. Revered across many parts of Europe where images of him are commonplace, St Columban was described as ‘a European saint’ by Pope Benedict XVI due to the extent of his missionary travels and the many monasteries he founded.

An Post announces GPO Witness History Public Art commissions.


An Post has announced that the recipients of the GPO: Witness History Public Art Commissions are Dublin Dance Festival - which will develop six new dance solos titled ‘Embodied’ - and a visual arts collaboration between artists Alanna O’Kelly, Brian Hand and Orla Ryan - who will produce a contemporary art work titled ‘Stormy Petrel/Guairdeall’.

Stamp set captures Lusitania tragedy


A two stamp set, released by An Post today (Thursday May 7th, 2015), marks the centenary of the WW1 sinking of the passenger liner Lusitania off the coast of Cork in May 1915.

Stamps Commemorate 1915 Gallipoli Landings


Two new stamps were issued today by An Post to commemorate the Gallipoli Landings of World War 1, part of a disastrous Allied attempt to control the sea route to Russia in 1915. The campaign cost the lives of some 3,000 Irishmen serving in the British Army at the time.

Shannon Heritage wins contract for €7m GPO Centre


26th February, 2015: An Post has appointed Shannon Heritage, part of the newly established Shannon Group plc, to operate and manage the €7m GPO Witness History Interpretive Exhibition Centre. The contract was awarded following a competitive tender process. The world-class visitor centre is currently under construction in the inner eastern courtyard of the iconic building and is expected to attract up to 300,000 visitors annually following its opening at Easter 2016

Reign of the crane


In the early hours of a recent Sunday morning  a giant 500-tonnes, 110m crane lifted a second 52 metre tower-crane into position, piece-by-piece, within the inner courtyard at Dublin’s iconic GPO.   The crane now lifts  building material of all types and sizes over the roof of the building, enabling ongoing construction works for GPO: Witness History, a world-class interpretive exhibition centre.

Thursday, 22nd January 2015: The 50th Anniversary of an historic meeting between then Taoiseach Sean Lemass and the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland Terence O’Neill is marked today with the release, by An Post, of a commemorative stamp.

New stamps stick science under the microscope
