An Post Literacy

Writing and reading is very important to us in An Post. Without it, no one would be able to send letters, postcards or even thank you cards. That’s why we try to help and encourage people to read and write as often as they can, including adults who find it difficult and young people like you.

You learn to read, write and spell from when you start school. But there are some people in Ireland who aren’t as lucky.

These people find it very difficult to read and write, because many of them left school at an early age. In fact, one in four adults are thought to have literacy problems.

An Post has teamed up with The National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) to let these people know where they can get help.

So far NALA and An Post have been very successful and together have helped lots of people (over 13,000) with their literacy difficulties.

One out of every eight letters you read is the letter ‘e’. However, in 1939 an author named Ernest Vincent wrote a 50,000 word novel called Gadsby. And guess what? There is not one single letter ‘e’ in the whole thing! Amazing!
